Shelter is a song made as a collaboration between Porter Robinson and Madeon. It also is a major meme on the VvvvvaVvvvvvr channel.
Overview[]
"Shelter" is a single collaboration between Porter Robinson and Madeon that was released on August 11, 2016. Despite the two artists being friends, it is their only collaboration. The song received an animated short film made by A-1 Pictures and Crunchyroll in October 18, 2016. The official synopsis of the short film is as follows:
Shelter tells the story of Rin, a 17-year-old girl who lives her life inside of a futuristic simulation completely by herself in infinite, beautiful loneliness. Each day, Rin awakens in virtual reality and uses a tablet which controls the simulation to create a new, different, beautiful world for herself. Until one day, everything changes, and Rin comes to learn the true origins behind her life inside a simulation.

Shelter first appeared on the channel in April 2017 and has been used on a semi-regular basis since. TurretBot is mostly responsible for making Shelter a meme on the channel, although it appeared once prior. The majority of Shelter rips are based on the instrumental of "Shelter".
Throughout 2017, dozens of rips were uploaded treating Shelter as a game name, including an entire event for the music video's first anniversary. These rips feature a metadata joke where the platform section in the description had a new platform added to the list with each rip, while retaining all the previous ones. After "Ending - Shelter" (January 8, 2018), Shelter was unofficially banned from the channel.[citation needed] With the upload of "Shelter 2 - Shelter 2" (May 28, 2018), Shelter was replaced by Shelter 2, which was basically the same but without the platform joke. In December 2019 after the announcement of the channel ending, Shelter 2 was superseded by Shelter 3, although Shelter 2 was not banned.
With the return from the hiatus for VvvvvaVvvvvvr: Chapter 2, the ban on Shelter rips was officially added to the rules.[citation needed] The only exception for this ban is likely the Shelter 2539 Day event.
Characterization[]
The rip "Prologue - Shelter" is actually a lore video that takes place on April 30th, 2017, one month into NnnnnaNnnnnnr's channel takeover and the day before "Main Theme (Mobile Version) - Shelter" was uploaded. In the rip, Nnnnna invites Rin to support his cause of higher quality content for the channel, and she accepts. This rip was immediately followed by "Ending - Shelter". This lore was later included in "[The VvvvvaVvvvvvr Timeline: A Summary of The Gay Lore]" to mark the introduction of Shelter on the channel.
Aside from the Prologue rip, Shelter was not involved with anything lore-related until "My Final Stand [Episode 6] - Ends Here, Ends Now", the final Vavr lore before the 2 year hiatus. In that vip, Rin appears to give NnnnnaNnnnnnr a "motivational speech" (except that it's actually just the "ey" and "ah" chops from the song). Since the return of the hiatus, Shelter has yet to appear in any new lore.
